Roads and city centre car parks have been closed and gritters are being given a police escort as Preston descended into gridlock on Wednesday morning.
>> Transport services hit in fresh snow blast

Police described roads as "lethal" due to a downpour of hail shortly before 8am which froze immediately.

Gritters were expected to be sent out again on Wednesday morning in an effort to clear some of the ice patches.

Traffic ground to a halt around Fulwood and Broughton as drivers negotiated their way to work extremely slowly, some getting stuck on slopes and hills.

Eastway in Fulwood, Riversway, Water Lane and Woodplumpton Road in Ashton, London Road, North Road, Fylde Road, Tag Lane in Ingol and Black Bull Lane in Fulwood.

The Mall St George's car park had to be closed due to ice on Lune Street, causing chaos for Christmas shoppers.

Commuters were stuck in lengthy queues on London Road as vehicles struggled to move along icy stretches.

A lorry driver had to abandon his wagon and a bus driver called for help after his vehicle got stuck.

The A59 was closed at Priory Lane, Penwortham, due to ice, with motorists reporting it took up to 90 minutes to get over Penwortham Hill.

And huge queues were reported in Fulwood near junction 31a of the M6.

Gritting wagons had to get police escorts into Preston city centre because they could not get through the congestion.

Angry motorists bombarded the Evening Post with calls about the hazardous conditions.

Loretta Hodgson, 43, took half-an-hour to get from the city centre to New Hall Lane.

She said: "It was like a skating rink.

"Cars were slipping everywhere. It was absolutely atrocious.

"Surely the council should be gritting the main roads?"

A spokesman for Preston Police said: "It's absolute chaos right through the city.

"Roads are absolutely lethal starting from the flyover (from Penwortham).

"Cars are getting stuck on any roads with a hill on them. The heavy downpour of hail has frozen.

"Fortunately, drivers have been really sensible and it's resulted in people getting to their destinations late but safely."

Motorists are reported to be struggling to get up London Road.
