A round-up of news in brief from across Lancashire.
Family centre hit by blaze
Firefighters were called to a community centre in Preston after a cooker caught fire.
It happened at St Luke's Family Resource Centre, Ribbleton Lane, at 12.15am on Friday.
A fire service spokesman said: "We were alerted by police to the fire alarm sounding and smoke coming out of a vent.
"The hot plate had been left on and had made contact with plastic that had ignited."
The property was severely smoke-logged.

Smoking kills three a week
Smoking kills 169 people a year in part of Lancashire, figures have revealed.
The official NHS figures for Chorley mean that more than three people a week are dying from smoking-related illnesses.
The Ribble Valley area, meanwhile, has among the lowest level of smoking-related deaths but there are still two per week.

Man admits drug offence
An Ashton man who admitted possessing cannabis has had the drug confiscated.
Karl Leyland, 24, of Waterloo Road, must pay £25 costs.

Revamp on agenda
The revamp of Preston's Flag Market will be on the agenda at the city centre committee on Wednesday. Preston Council will discuss funding for the scheme at a meeting in the Town Hall at 10am.

Cricket club move
Plans to create a new home for a cricket club will be debated on Monday. Harris Cricket Club wants to move to Miller Green in Cottam, Preston. Lea Parish Council will discuss the matter.

Get a taste of Lancashire
The county's rich heritage will be celebrated on Lancashire Day on Friday. Events include tasting some traditional Lancashire food at Lancaster and Morecambe tourist information centres.

Chance to quiz health chiefs
A Question Time-style forum will give people the chance to grill health bosses on Wednesday. BBC Northwest correspondent Dave Guest will lead the session from 6pm at Richmond Room, Riverside Holiday Park, Banks.

From one continent to another
Acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Anabelle Chvostek will perform at the New Continental pub on South Meadow Lane, Preston, tonight from 9pm.

Help yourself to books...
Customers in libraries across Lancashire can now help themselves to books thanks to a new self-service system.
Eight libraries in the county, including Chorley, Lancaster and Morecambe, have been selected to benefit from the self service points.
The system within libraries will enable customers to borrow, return and renew books and other resources by themselves.

Electrical fault sparks car fire
A car was destroyed by fire in Lancaster.
Firefighters believe an electrical fault caused the blaze in the Rover 400 at 9pm just off Bay Horse Lane.
A fire service spokesman said: "The man's car was written off."

Fire damages stairwells
Firecrews tackled a blaze in a maisonette in Morecambe.
Stairwells were left damaged in the incident which happened at Skipton Street at 4pm on Thursday.

Gas fire blaze
A gas fire sparked a blaze at a house in Miller Road, Ribbleton, at 5pm on Thursday.
