THE two local leaders of Longridge branch of the Brittle Bone Society are thrilled to learn that the charity is the subject of BBC Radio 4’s appeal this coming Sunday, February 5.

John and Gertie Farmery have raised £78,375 since the branch started in 1973 to aid the research and treatment into the condition which claimed the life of Gertie’s daughter.

As secretary and chairman respectively, they have held many events including book sales and numerous raffles to raise funds and hope the appeal will be effective nationwide.

It is being aired at 7.55am and 9.26pm on Sunday and the Uk team said “As the only UK charity supporting people with OI (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) we are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to have a slot on the much prized BBC Radio 4 Charity Appeal.

“Our appeal will be presented by trustee Samantha Renke who offers a heartfelt, moving but positive account of what living with OI is really like.” Sam says “being a part of the Brittle Bone Society (BBS) is like being part an extended family.”

The year 2011 was a benchmark year for the BBS which was one of four UK charities selected to feature in the 2011 BBC Children In Need Rocks concert in Manchester. This helped the much needed Support Worker programme aiding families acrosso the UK.

The charity has met with UK Minister for Disabled People, Maria Miller MP in London, to discuss welfare reform and fulfilling potential for disabled people in society, and it continues to run vital specialised events for members. This year it is piloting a new volunteer support programme to reach more people across the country.
