Tradition: Young Farmers at the blessing of the Plough at St Hildas Church

Bilsborrow Young Farmers attended St Hilda’s Church in force last Sunday for the seasonal ceremony of the Blessing of the Plough, Churn and Seed, incorporating a communion.

Conducted by the Rev Margaret Sherdley, assisted by Lay Reader Dianne Maguire, the service heralded the new farming year invoking God’s blessing to all who work on the land in all its aspects.

The plough was manhandled into the Chancel by Phil Miller, John Smith, Joe Metcalf, Alex Degnen, William Stuart and J Bracken. Lessons were read by Phil Miller and Amy Robinson and Sarah Stuart and Joanne Havard carried out the collection. Farms and the land don’t go to sleep in the winter. There’s always work to do and, in spite of the currentwintery weather, farmers are already preparing for a new year of growth and husbandry.

Church Warden and local dairy farmer David Tomlinson said: “Not a lot of churches have kept up this tradition. At St Hilda’s, in the centre of a large farming community, we think it’s important to observe it.

“It is especially good to involve our Young Farmers. We are grateful for their efforts in bringing the heavy plough into church, as well as the churn and bucket of seed to be blessed.”
