The committee at a 110-year-old tennis club are hoping a £5,000 grant will bring their facilities up-to-date.
Woodplumpton Tennis Club has bid for a building makeover with Homeserve, which has teamed up with our sister paper the Lancashire Evening Post to offer cash to carry out a range of repairs.
Chairman Paul Hogan said: “We own a derelict brick built shed that was originally a changing and toilet area, but this has fallen into disrepair over the last 20 years or so.
“There was no door, the windows were broken and it became a haven for youths to congregate and was subsequently badly vandalised and unusable.
“The club used to enter a team into the local tennis league, but this stopped about three years ago due to lack of members. The old committee disbanded 12 months ago and the remaining members formed a new committee.”
The new committee wants to increase membership, enter a senior team into a league and make facilities attractive to local school children to encourage them to join.
It also wants to increase the number taking family membership and encourage people of all ages to take up the sport.
But to do this, the committee says its needs the makeover, worth £5,000, to help finish repairs to the facilities.
A new roof and door have already been put on to help make the building secure.
The club is part of Woodplumpton and District Community Club and was established in 1902.
Mr Hogan added: “We need to renovate our shed and reinstate it as a suitable changing and toilet area for our members, and for the use of visiting teams once we put a team back in the league.
“We need a further £4,500 in order to complete our project and to allow our 110 year-old-club to flourish again, to become a focal point of our community and to allow our youngsters to participate in sport in an age where childhood fitness and their lack of inclusion in sport, is a major concern.”
