County gearing up for police boss poll

Voters in the Garstang and Longridge areas, and throughout Lancashire, will go to the polls on Thursday, November 15, to choose the county’s first ever elected police and crime commissioner.

When nominations for the position closed last week four candidates had thrown their hats into the ring. The post of police and crime commissioner will replace the current Lancashire Police Authority. The candidates are:

- Afzal Anwar (Liberal Democrats), of Nelson.

- Tim Ashton (Conservative), of Lytham St Annes.

- Robert Drobny (UK Ind-ependence Party), of Knott End.

- Clive Grunshaw( Labour), of Fleetwood .

All the candidates have had to find a £5,000 deposit and secure the signatures of 100 people from within the county.

Local authorities throughout Lancashire are organising the poll, which will take place at the same polling stations as local government elections.

All voters on the electoral roll will be notified of their polling station.

There have been fears there will be a low turnout for the poll, which has been criticised as an unnecessary change. There have also been concerns that, following electoral scams at the last general election, about the need for the rules to be kept.

Graham Burgess, polling officers, said: “Although electoral fraud is rare, it can involve serious criminal offences.

“In the run-up to this election, my staff and I, the police and the Electoral Commission have been working to prevent any cases of electoral fraud. If anyone has evidence that electoral fraud may be taking place, they should report it to the police for investigation.”

On November 14, the day before the poll, the Courier/News will carry a feature on the candidates.
