Mayor’s charity sale tops ‘hat’ parade

Hats away: Mayor Sandra Perkins contemplates her collection before selling

Hats away: Mayor Sandra Perkins contemplates her collection before selling

If you want to get ahead – get a hat!

It’s certainly a saying that rang true for Garstang Mayor Coun Sandra Perkins after she decided to sell off her fine collection of special occasion hats to raise funds for dementia research.

Coun Perkins set up a stall at the charity coffee morning at Garstang’s United Reformed Church, on Croston Road, on Thursday.

She said: “I’ve got something like 40-odd hats and I’m downsizing.

“I can’t take all the hats with me. I thought the coffee morning might be an ideal time to sell them with spring weddings coming up.”

As for the choice of charity – Coun Perkins has a special reason for choosing the Dementia Research project at Hope Hospital. She said: “My husband died with dementia on Boxing Day 2011.

“From now on until May all my charity fund-raising will be for dementia research.”

Another charity which has benefited during her year of office has been Alex House at Lancaster, which is a respite home for severely handicapped children.

Coun Perkins says she and her sister share a love of statement hats, although their tastes differ: “I’m a hat person and I had quite a few hats before I became mayor.

“But when I knew I was going to be mayor I looked round charity shops, went on eBay and have had them given me by friends.

“They’ve come from all sorts of sources! My tastes are eclectic.”

The new mayor will take office on May 23 after a Mayor Making ceremony at the annual Town Meeting.
