Meet the young business brains
Nearly there: Proud youngsters keeping track of their total
Enterprising youngsters from St Michael’s-on-Wyre CE Primary School could give business guru Lord Sugar a run for his money.
The clever Key Stage Two children were each given £1 and challenged to turn it into more to raise cash for a new classroom extension.
And they came up with a whole range of ideas, from auctioning their £1 coins on ebay, to selling ready potted up monkey puzzle tree seeds, chopping up and selling firewood, through to running a quiz, baking cakes and busking. Together they raised a grand total of £1,700 towards the £111,000 cost of the extension.
Headteacher Cathy Brough said: “The children had to write a business plan as well as work out their budgets.
“Giving them £1 each and asking them to make more taught them a lot about how money works.
“It was really good for them to think about what they could do with their £1 coins.
“It taught them a lot about how money and business works, and they all want to do it again next year.”
Work on the extension, to be used for IT studies, is scheduled to start next month and be finished around September.
