Over 60s invited to talk on heating help

Heat: Help is at hand for the elderly

Heat: Help is at hand for the elderly

A talk about a scheme being launched by Preston Council to ensure older people in the borough keep safe and warm over winter is being held at Whitechapel Village Hall tomorrow.

The village’s friendship group (formerly the senior citizens) is hosting the talk at 7.30pm when Finlay Hodge, of Community Futures, will speak about the government scheme involving free heating boiler services.

Using central government funding, the council and several of its partners have put together a programme of support.

The main features of the programme include a free service for heating boilers and gas fires with condemned or defective equipment being repaired or replaced.

A full energy survey of the house will be undertaken with advice provided on how to save energy and reduce fuel bills and free insulation may be available.

Also, if prolonged snow and ice affect Preston, older residents will be able to get their paths cleared and gritted free of charge.

Finally, if the cold weather prevents people from getting out to do their shopping or collect medication, volunteers will provide support in getting these tasks done.

To qualify for the boiler and insulation scheme, residents must be a Preston resident, aged 60 or over, own the property they live in and not have taken part in the scheme last year.

To be eligible for other help you must live in Preston and be over 60.
