Sandra Langhorne presents the award to councillor June Jackson of Stalmine PC

DELIGHTED horse riders have presented an award to a parish council for its help in maintaining bridleways in the area and, in particular, clearing a bridleway which had become blocked.

Riders from Fylde Coast Bridleways Association took their horses along to Stalmine and presented a special award from the British Horse Society which was in recognition of good practice by local councils.

The Access Achievement award to Coun Ken Atkinson and Coun June Jackson of Stalmine Parish Council.

Rider Sandra Langhorne said that during the summer of 2011, the popular Corcas Lane bridleway became impassable at times, because it was locked with mud and cars had been parked across the path at the lower end.

“When Lancashire County Council failed to find a solution we approached Stalmine Parish Council,” she said.

“The sum of £250 was allocated to adapt the entrance to the bridleway, known as Corcas Labe Bridleway 2A.

“After several discussions with us, Stalmine Parish Council arranged for work in March last year, as soon as the ground was dry enough to begin..

“The council workers’ experience with farm machinery and the council’s good relationship with the landowner for gaining approval and future maintenance of the dyke speeded up the process.

“It was agreed that a temporary fence with reduced central access was suitable and members of our society helped out by planting willow cuttings to mark out the boundaries.

“Stalmine Parish Council covered the cost of all the works and also improved drainage of the whole stretch of bridleway by digging out the ditches.

“It is encouraging to have the full support of a small parish council which was co-operative, acting swiftly and helping to resolve this problem at no financial cost to Fylde Coast Bridleways Association.”
