A village has landed more than £22,000 to improve its sports facilities.

Elswick Parish Council will receive £22,388 of National Lottery money from Sport England.

The cash will pay for replacement fencing around the multi-use games area and also enable basketball to be added to the list of sports available, which include football, tennis and netball.

Elswick Parish Council chairman Paul Hayhurst said: “This is marvellous news for Elswick and surrounding villages, as this is the only facility of its type for many miles around.

“At the end of last year the games area had to be closed due to the dangerous condition of the fencing and the facility would have been lost for the community without this funding.

“It will now be restored in time to open in the spring and will provide a local legacy for the 2012 Olympics.”

Fylde MP Mark Menzies said: “This is great news for the people of Elswick and reflects the continued hard work of the parish council. I offer them my full support and greatly look forward to seeing the work completed.”

The Elswick project is one of 310 across England receiving lottery investment from the third round of the Inspired Facilities Fund and one of more than 1,000 to benefit overall from National Lottery funding through the scheme.

Sport England chairman Richard Lewis said: “This National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in Lancashire from last year’s successful Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“With so many clubs in the north west having benefited from this fund already, and building on the success of last summer, this is the legacy people want for their local community.”

l Bids will be accepted for the fourth round of Inspired Facilities Funding from March 4.
