Water firm’s turned on the cash tap for air ambulance

An air ambulance which helps save lives in Lancashire has been given more than £50,000 raised by the region’s water firm and its workers.

The Preston-based North West Air Ambulance has been given the money by Britain’s biggest listed water company, United Utilities.

Cash was raised by employees at a number of charity events organised at the water and wastewater treatment plants which supply water to the north west of England and a population of around seven million.

United Utilities then matched funded the sum employees raised.

Water boss Steve Mogford said: “Many of our customers, and indeed employees, are forever grateful to skill and commitment of the crews of the air ambulance. It costs around £4.2m to keep flying and saving lives. So anything we can do as the region’s water supplier to help raise those funds we’re delighted to.”

North West Air Ambulance chief executive Lynda Brislin said: “We are extremely grateful for this donation from United Utilities.

“Our partnership with the water firm has got off to a great start with this substantial amount being raised in just three months. Last year, we flew over 1,400 rescue missions throughout the region and so a huge donation like this is vital in keeping our helicopters operational and saving lives across the north west.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to all staff who have given a lot of their time and effort to organise some really unique events to raise funds for our charity.”

The choppers fly seven days a week, 365 days a year, proving a rapid response covering an area of 5,500 square miles. Crews can be called out five times a day on average, rising to 10 in the summer.

So far this year crews have completed 179 missions across the North West.
