Whirlwind of activity marks Fair Trade fortnight

You would expect no less from Garstang!
A positive whirlwind of Fair Trade activity marked International Fair Trade fortnight in the world’s first Fair Trade town.
For one young person, Jessica Butler, from Year 4 at Garstang Community Primary School, it was a chance to explain why she would be asking her mum to buy Fair Trade products from now on.
Michael Tempan, of Garstang Fair Trade Steering Committee, explained Jessica had been among a group of young Fair Trade supporters who gave presentations at The Fig Tree.
Their attentive audience in the cafe included some visiting students from Japan.
He said: “Jessica spoke of the visit to Garstang of a Guatemalan coffee producer, whom she had met the previous Friday.
“Douglas Lopez, the Fair Trade Strategic Development Officer for the Fedecocagua Coffee Co-operative had visited The Fig Tree along with Brad Hill from the Co-op.
“Jessica was inspired by Douglas to support Fair Trade and has asked her mum to buy Fair Trade products from now on.”
A presentation by Amy Fligelstone concentrated on “Why we need Fair Trade”.
Ben Crowther and Anna Crowther gave presentations on the abolition of the slave trade and the Quaker movement.
They also spoke about how it promoted justice and human dignity as does Fair Trade.
Children from both Nateby CE Primary school and SS Mary and Michael school enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Fig Tree for a chocolate workshop,
Meanwhile, Fair Trade supporters Marlene and John Fenton visited the Co-op to encourage customers try some Fair Trade chocolate.
Local primary schools produced collages which were made from Fair Trade packaging and wrappers for display in local businesses.
Now, Garstang Community Academy has decided to organise a public speaking competition on the subject of Fair Trade.
