THE village of Calder Vale was temporarily turned into Venice at the weekend as residents celebrated their annual festival with a Venitian theme.
Organisers encouraged adults and children to dress in Venitian-style costumes and even made a gondola float to add to the atmosphere.
The procession around the quaint, picture postcard village was led by Pilling Band.
The most poignant part of the parade was the playing of 'Abide with me' at the village war memorial during which each of the village children placed a flower.
Festival spokesperson Jane Sharples said it had been a wonderful day, with the whole community joining in the fun.
Incoming festival queen Melissa Whittaker was crowned at a specially created podium by Mrs Elizabeth Heritage, the soon-to-retire headmistress of Calder Vale St John CE School. Thanks were also expressed to outgoing queen Courtney Myerscough.
Among the many fancy dress characters were gondoliers, phantoms and masked ladies.
Overall winner of the fancy dress was Britney Myerscough.
