THE STREETS of Garstang were flooded with reminders of times gone-by this week as the community turned out to celebrate the traditional Victorian Festival.
Hundreds of people from around the region wrapped up against the cold and packed the town centre to join in with the festivities, catch up on their Christmas shopping and enjoy the various displays.
Garstang's town crier Hilary McGrath and Father Christmas greeted families as they made their way up High Street and the sounds of a choir and brass band echoed around the streets and weinds.
And Morris Dancers, the Over Wyre and North Cloggers and Punch and Judy added to the festivities, entertaining people of all ages.
Over Wyre clog dancer Barrie Parker said: "It is always been a very good festival and very enjoyable and this has been our first opportunity to perform here and we have been looking forward to it."
Visitors were also treated to the appetising aromas of roasted chestnuts, the Soroptimists' parched peas and mulled wine as they passed the variety of stalls and Booths put on a fine spread of festive foods to sample.
The town centre was closed to traffic to make way for the huge Victorian style fair with traditional and modern goods on offer and ladies and gents of the town certainly looked the part in full Victorian finery.
Many of the town's businesses all played their part, with later opening hours and a number of community organisations and charities set up stalls to promote their aims and raise funds.
Schoolchildren were keen to take part and pupils of Garstang St Thomas' CE School and SS Mary Michael Catholic Primary School helped entertain the crowds with a special clog dance, complete with authentic costumes.
Garstang Police held a successful charity tombola, while Garstang and Over Wyre Rotary Club members served hot food to passers-by.
The event had again drawn in a fantastic crowd and Damian Carr, spokesman for organisers, Garstang Chamber of Trade, said it was great to see the popularity of the festival had continued to grow.
He said: "The whole point about the Christmas festival is that it is a festival to promote our local businesses and provide hospitality for the people who offer their support throughout the year.
"The sheer numbers again this year were great and we were delighted.
"There was so much postive comment about the event and it's lovely to hear it was so enjoyable for everyone.
"There were lots of different things going on and there was a wonderful Christmas family atmosphere.
"Certainly a huge thank-you has to be given to all those who organised the festival. Also to the businesses, charities, the donations and everyone who supported the event. Without them it wouldn't happen."
