Garstang Victorian Festival success
GARSTANG knows Christmas has arrived every year when the town turns back the clock to the Yuletide of yesterday.
The two-night Victorian Festival has become an annual tradition, eagerly looked forward to by townsfolk and visitors alike.
Monday evening, the first night of the festival, was no exception with people dressing in Victorian costume and entering into the Christmas spirit.
The High Street and other parts of the town centre were transformed into a winter wonderland and, while this year we didn't get snow falling, the Christmas lights helped to add extra colour to the rosy cheeks of most of those taking part.
The delicious smell of roasting hog added attractive aromas to the historic atmosphere while an old-fashioned Punch and Judy show kept the youngsters occupied.
Features from Christmas old and contemporary mixed well and the attractions stretched from the old council offices to Bridge Street, venue for a Made in Lancashire food and gift stall.
Garstang's traditionally dressed town crier Hilary McGrath carried out her first festive duties since being appointed earlier this year, accompanying Father Christmas to his grotto.
Among the VIP visitors were Garstang mayor Coun Joan Williams and her consort Coun David Williams.
During the festivities the winners of the Garstang Chamber of Trade Christmas Window display competition were presented with their certificates. Winners were: 1. Corner Bookshop, 2. Conway Cards, 3. Car Care.
The evening also saw the presentation of a £500 donation towards the Christmas lights fund by McCarthy and Stone.
* Yesterday (Tuesday) a television crew from BBC were due in town for a live filming of the festivities for last night's North West News bulletin. Reporter Stewart Flinders was expected to interview townsfolk, visitors and organisers of the popular event.
