A GARSTANG primary school is one step closer to creating a brand new outdoor classroom after winning £1,000 in a competition organised by Briery Homes.
The Kendal-based housebuilder offered local primary schools in the town the chance to send in proposals on how they would spend £1,000, and entries were judged at the firm's head office.
All the children produced detailed and well-considered presentations and both children and staff contributed to a fine effort.
But the entry from Garstang Community Primary School was exceptionally good, and the children were presented with a cheque at a special event last week.
A Briery Homes spokesperson said: "All participating schools entered into the spirit of the event and children throughout the area were able to contribute their ideas, some with a great deal of knowledge and at times humour. This made for a very enjoyable and difficult judging process.
"However, the entry from Garstang Community Primary School surpassed the rest. They involved every child in the school, teachers and governors and presented an excellent proposal which made very entertaining and imaginative reading."
As well as presenting the cheque, goody bags were given to all the children and six lucky pupils were chosen to visit the Briery Homes development in Catterall, where they had the opportunity to see how homes are built and visit the show homes to see how a finished home will look.
Headteacher Mike McCusker said the money will either be spent on an extension to the school's adventure log trail or a new tyre park.
It is hoped the new development will be part of a much bigger outdoor project, and staff and pupils are currently awaiting the result of a further funding bid from Lancashire County Council.
