KATHLEEN Pinon's mother ignored the advice in Noel Coward's song "Don't put your daughter on the stage Mrs Worthington."
In fact, Kathleen's mum couldn't keep her off it.
As a child in her native Cheshire the young Kathleen was a nimble-footed girl who always wanted to be on the move.
The well known Garstang dance teacher, now in her early 60s, recalls: "I simply could not keep still so my mum took me to the local dance school in Frodsham at the age of three and a half...
"I loved it and I still do!" she says.
At the age of 10 she graduated to the Deva School of Dance, Chester, where she continued to enjoy all forms of dance - modern, tap, national and ballet - all of which she now teaches in Garstang.
Her education was straightforward, though not especially academic, and after leaving secondary modern school at the age of 15 she went straight into the dancing profession, passing an audition in London for a part in the chorus line of Aladdin at the Theatre Royal, Chester.
Her next role was in the chorus of Melody Inn at the seaside resort of New Brighton, Wirrall, at the same time as continuing her studies for her higher dance grades.
As is the case with such a profession it involved a lot of moving around, but in 1965, when she married, she decided to settle in the north Lancashire area.
She met her husband to be, Jose Pinon, a Spanish caterer, while she was working in Nottingham, some time before doing a season on the stage of the Alhambra.
The couple eventually settled at Fulwood, where they have lived for 20 years.
After a "career break" bringing up her two children Kathleen decided to go into teaching dance.
She was already helping at the Garstang-based June Cox Dance School, and decided to go for formal teaching qualifications at Preston College. When June Cox left the area Kathleen took over the school and has been running it under her own name for the past 14 years.
She is clearly a good teacher, as is evidenced by the hundreds of mainly young people who have been put through their paces over the years. Among her many qualifications she holds the Certificate in Dance Education.
Other pointers to her teaching abilities are the impressive results her pupils get from both the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and the Royal Academy of Dance.
But it's not only the results which show her teaching skills but her attitude to her pupils - mainly girls between the ages of three and early 20s, plus a few older students.
Kathleen's kind but disciplined approach brings out the best in her young dancers as well as increasing their confidence.
"Dancing is one way of helping a child to fulfil their potential. I do like the discipline, and it is nice to look at children who have danced from the age of three to teenage years and see them accomplishing a goal."
At the KP School of Dance there are no favourites - all the youngsters are treated equally. None of her former pupils have gone on to particular fame or fortune, but they have enjoyed their time with Aunty Kathy who has helped to give them a good character, confidence and a lifelong love of dance.
Home for the school over the years has been Garstang Community Centre. Kathleen is one of the many users who rent rooms in the building who have been calling for clarity over its future for some time, and is disappointed that a decision on its future is still uncertain.
"It would be nice for us to know what is going to happen to it," she said.
Currently there are about 60 youngsters and 25 adults on the books, who attend various sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Dance styles covered are ballet, tap, modern/jazz and national (dances from different countries).
Dancing all these years is clearly good exercise and has certainly help Kathy keep young-looking, fit and nimble.
l The dance school holds shows from time to time, the next one being, "Let's Dance" at Garstang High School on October 10 and 11, 2008.
