SOME of Britain’s top arm wrestlers will be heading to The Crofters Hotel, Cabus, on Saturday, February 25, when the hotel will be staging the British Arm Wrestling Federation’s New Year Cup.

This open event, full of bulging biceps and maximised muscle, sees novice and professional arm wrestlers going hand to hand in various weight categories and according to whether they are right or left-handed.

Technique, overall arm strength, hand grip size, wrist endurance and flexibility are all factors that come into play once both arms are placed on the arm wrestling table and the ‘drive’ begins.

This compelling action will take place in The Crofters ballroom, where competitors, family members and spectators will mingle and watch the tournament unfold. False starts and the lifting of the elbow from a matted area can both be penalised by the referee.

The 2012 New Year Cup is promising to offer up a ‘supermatch’ between two of the great British names in this sport – Stuart Hall and Steve Kerlew – so The Crofters is expecting more spectators than ever.

All are welcome to watch and there will be drinks available from the bar and food served in The Crofters Tavern, where a special meal and drink deal costing just £7.95 is available through the new Sundowner menu, available to 6pm.

The Crofters Hotel’s owner, Nicola Cheetham, says: “We are delighted to have the New Year Cup being staged here, having proven to the BAF in previous years that we are great venue at which to stage this event, thanks to our ballroom, our proximity to the motorway and our large car park.

“Without meaning to use a pun, the arm wrestling event is totally gripping and hugely absorbing. For anyone who has never seen professional arm wrestling in action, this is a chance to do so”.

More information available at www.croftershotel.co.uk . The arm wrestling weigh in starts at 1pm with the action commencing at 2pm and ending around 9pm.
