A Brownie unit which started almost a year ago has increased in number so well that it is now needing the help of some new volunteers.

Leader Melanie Braithwaite, who helped to form the new 2nd Longridge Brownies last September, explains how it began with eight girls – but that number has now tripled.

We all really enjoy being leaders, and I really hope people will be willing to give up an hour or two of their time each week to come and help us

“We have recently been on our first pack holiday to Guy’s Farm Activity Centre in Lancaster, where the photograph was taken,” she said.

“The girls stayed there and away from home for two nights, they took part in lots of challenging activities and most of all, also had lots of fun.

“But for us in Guiding throughout Longridge – where membership numbers in all units are growing – to continue providing meetings for girls aged between 5 and 16, we need more volunteers.

“All Rainbow, Brownie and Guide packs are looking for helpers to come along each week.

“And,” she stresses “being a volunteer for Girl Guiding does not mean taking on the responsiblity of a whole unit,... you would be working with other leaders.

“We all really enjoy being leaders, and hope that you would be willing to give up an hour or two of your time each week to come and help out.”

Being a volunteer with Girl Guiding is like having a second family and something Melanie and her team all really enjoy.

She adds: “We have a great team here in Longridge and are always willing to get our hands dirty.

“We have taken part in Longridge Field Day for two years now and will be returning next year.

“We also recently organised a fundraiser and raised over £600!”

Melanie stressed once again the importance of providing meetings for girls aged 5-15 and the need for more volunteers.

“Being a volunteer for Girl Guiding does not mean taking on the responsiblity of a whole unit, you would be working with other leaders.

“We all really enjoy being leaders, and I really hope people will be willing to give up an hour or two of their time each week to come and help us.”
