Tuning up to help people through singing sessions

Volunteers are being sought in the Wyre for a pioneering project, called Singing For The Brain, which harnesses music making to aid dementia care.
Under the project, the Alzheimer’s Society along with Lancashire County Council is encouraging people with dementia, and their carers, to sing their hearts out and know that they will feel better for doing so.
It builds on research which reveals musical memories can often be recalled more easily than other memories, using singing to bring people together in a friendly and stimulating social environment.
Grace Dyke, dementia support manager at Alzheimer’s Society in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, said : “We’re always on the look-out for volunteers to help with Singing for the Brain.
“We are eager to hear from enthusiastic volunteers who are keen to make a difference.
“There are over 5,200 people living with dementia in north Lancashire and that number is rising all the time. Services like this are vital to ensure people with dementia are supported to live well with the condition. “

The project, which was recently officially launched at Langdales Hotel in St Annes received celebrity backing from singer Anne Nolan of the Nolan sisters.
County Councillor Carolyn Evans, Lancashire County Council’s disability champion, said: “We can’t underestimate the importance of initiatives like this which are designed to help people to stimulate their memory. Despite only starting in October, the group has been a huge success.
“Those attending have experienced many positive benefits such as building friendships, gaining support and sharing experiences.”
