TWO of Garstang's three supermarkets could be in for big changes if Co-op's bid to buy rival Somerfield goes ahead.
The £1.57 billion City deal - still subject to approval from the Office of Fair Trading - looks likely to go ahead later this year.
But officials of both companies say it is still too early to say how the buy-out will affect their stores in Garstang.
There has been speculation that in towns such as Garstang where there is both a Co-op and a Somerfield there might be local mergers, the possible closure of one of the stores, and redundancies.
But there has also been speculation, prompted by reports in the national press, that, as a result of the buy-out, some Somerfield stores might be sold off to other supermarket chains, possibly Morrisons or Waitrose.
Somerfield's PR chief, Pete Williams, said: "It is too early to speculate on the future for individual stores."
A Co-op spokesman said they would not be able to comment on individual stores until late September, by which time the OFT, will have considered the buy-out.
