A CONTINUED winter ferry service between Fleetwood and Knott End is set to get the green light from Wyre councillors.
And after being a popular success in its first full year, the Wyre Rose vessel is predicted to attract even more passengers in future.
To continue running in winter, Wyre will have to find £16,876 - half of the cost it shares with Lancashire County
Council.
Approval is likely to be given at Wyre's cabinet meeting tonight.
The county has verbally agreed to continue the winter operation but needs Wyre's formal approval.
Preesall councillor Paul Moon said: "I think the feedback we get from users speaks for itself. It's well used and would be missed if it was not there.
"When you see people walking down the ferry slipway to go to Fleetwood and vice-versa, it's very pleasing. It's a tradition I'd like to see carrying on."
A report to the cabinet will say: "The continuation of a year-round service has a number of operational benefits and, as demonstrated by the successful operation of the first year, full-season service is seen as an important and well-used transport link to the communities of Fleetwood and Knott End.
"It is anticipated user numbers would increase."
It is said that the ferry service is easier to maintain with year-round operation, ferry staff can continue in work and less dredging is needed.
The first 12 months of operation, to March this year, has seen 69,126 passengers with 6,537 of those travelling in winter.
During the summer the boat failed to sail on only three occasions.
The cost of supporting concessionary fares was £34,306.
