SHOPPERS and motorists have been warned to expect major disruption in Garstang during the summer as roadworks linked to the new Booths store development begin.
As part of the £6million store development, improvements are to be carried out on Park Hill Road – from the Park Hill cottages to the junction with Windsor Road.
The project will see the streamlining of Park Hill Road, including traffic calming measures aimed at making the historic narrow street – part of the town's one way traffic system – more pedestrian-friendly.
Highways chiefs revealed this week that closing the road during engineering work is not an option, even though it would have speeded up the project. Instead, they are to bring in temporary re-direction routes, with vehicles using Moss Lane and Windsor Road to pass through the town or gain access to the new-look car park, where the sole access is now off Windsor Road.
Also, in an effort to halt potential problems caused by parked cars – a regular feature on Moss Lane and parts of Windsor Road -– there will be a parking ban on those streets from 8am to 6pm.
The parking ban and traffic orders are expected to be in force from next Monday, July 13, when engineering work is due to start. Lancashire County Engineering Services has been appointed contractor.
County transport bosses say Park Hill Road will have to close to traffic for several nights during the summer, though the dates have yet to be fixed.
County principal roads engineer Mr Wai Kee Leung said: "For health and safety reasons in undertaking some operations there will also be a need to close the road completely at night time for two or three nights between the hours of 7pm to 11.30pm to traffic. Inevitably, the works on Park Hill Road and the diversion route will cause major disruption but the county council and their contractor will do everything possible to minimise the impact on the businesses, local residents, the travelling public and pedestrians."
The official period for the completion is late September, about the time the Booths store is expected to open, but contractors say they hope to complete work before the end of August.
At the same time Booths' contractors, MBMC will work on the new Garstang Town Square.
Mr Leung has urged businesses to contact him if they have any queries or comments on the scheme. He can be contacted on 01772 534598.
