THE owner of a Garstang taxi firm says his staff are being punished for trying to help elderly and disabled people shopping at Booths.
Garstang Cabs driver Ian Gornall was handed a £70 parking ticket while he nipped out to help a man who has walking difficulties with his shopping.
He had parked his car on the white cross-hatched road markings just outside the store entrance on Park
Hill Road.
Shawn Cross, owner of the firm, said Mr Gornall was very upset by the incident and had tried to explain to the parking warden why he had stopped there, but the ticket was issued anyway.
Mr Cross said: "We did write a letter to appeal against the fine, but they basically wrote back saying tough luck. They said that if we parked there, it would block the view of the zebra crossing - but it's a one way street. We're not blocking anybody's view parking on that side of the crossing.
"We're not putting anybody in danger. We park there to help the customers. Some of them can hardly walk. We're being fined for trying to help disabled people."
The firm paid the fine, which was reduced to £35 because it was paid within 14 days, but now Mr Cross is worried that the service they provide for their customers will be compromised.
He said: "We now have to park somewhere else, which will be very awkward. But we don't want to risk getting fined again."
Dorothy Fairburn, who lives at Wyre Vale Park, is also concerned about the problem. She has been getting a taxi from Booths every Wednesday for the past eight years.
She said: "I think it's ridiculous. Where else is there to pick people up? I'm very bad on my legs and there are a lot of people worse off than I am. What is going to happen to people like me? If they park on the yellow line we will have further to walk, and they won't be able to help us.
"On the high street there are yellow lines but everybody parks there and the wardens don't seem to do anything about it. It just seems a shame that a good taxi firm is being penalised."
Wyre Council's Parking Operations Manager Eugene Leal said that 14 tickets were issued in June for illegal parking on the cross-hatched area outside Booths.
He said: "The area where this vehicle was ticketed is close to a pedestrian crossing and is clearly marked with zig zag lines as a strict no parking zone. There are obvious safety reasons for this yet unfortunately some motorists seem to ignore them.
"The rest of the road, including the front of the Booths store, is marked with a single yellow line and drivers can use this area to pick up and drop off passengers if needed. We would advise motorists to use that area for this purpose."
