Garstang traders' Sunday opening question
SHOPS in Garstang could get a huge commercial boost from the new Booths store - if they open on Sundays.
That was the message this week from the town's Chamber of Trade, which has launched a survey to find out what shop owners think of the Sunday opening idea.
The questionnaire asks traders to consider opening an extra day a week to make the most of the expected flood of shoppers pouring into the town on Sundays to visit the new Booths when it opens next summer.
And president of the chamber, Sue Ritchie, hopes that if business people are positive about the Sunday shopping move, it could also have a positive impact on the town's Business Improvement District bid - meaning even more cash could be heading into Garstang to develop its commercial future.
She said: "We're trying not to lose trade in Garstang, and encourage people to come. Booths is going to be open on Sundays - but is anybody else?
"Barton Grange is just down the road and Sunday visitors will be asking what else is there to do around here? At the moment, one tea shop is open, and the Tourist Information Centre. The question is - can we do any better?"
The questionnaires sent to all traders in the town will be collected this week, and it is hoped that the information gathered will help the chamber and Garstang District Partnership to get a clearer picture of local opinion on the issue.
Fears have already been expressed by traders who worry that when the Booths store opens it will draw attention away from the High Street, and the Sunday opening proposal is just one idea that might increase revenue for shops and cafes.
Sue said: "We want to get some debate going. We want to see what people will say. If we're going to do it, we need to look at it now, not next summer.
"We need to look seriously at what we can do to keep Garstang vibrant and a place people want to come to.''
Sue continued that there were many issues for traders to consider, not least how they would cover additional staffing and costs of the extra day's trading, or whether they would look at closing on another midweek day to compensate.
She added that if Sunday opening went ahead it would be included in the BID application as an example of how traders were developing their commercial offering. Achieving BID status would then hopefully allow Garstang to access other government and Lottery funding streams to further develop business initiatives in the town.
Sue said: "We need people to let us know what they think so we can then make a decision. To open on a Sunday, everyone needs to co-operate."
