A POST office that was shut following the tragic death of the postmaster may now re-open after all - following a campaign led by his widow.
Hopes are high the immediate future of Catterall's Post Office has been secured after an announcement by Royal Mail bosses this week that they intend to re-open the branch.
The move comes after a well-supported campaign, launched by the widow of the previous postmaster, who gathered hundreds of names on a petition to save the post office.
Post Office counter services ceased at the News on Cock Robin Lane in late November after the sudden death of popular postmaster Ken Heavyside.
And fears over its long-term future mounted when a spokesman for the Royal Mail suggested it may never re-open in its current location.
But since the closure, Mr Heavyside's widow, Penny Heavyside of Cabus, has been battling with Royal Mail managers to find a replacement postmaster to re-open the office, saying it is relied on by many elderly residents and villagers south of Garstang.
Penny, who works at Barton Garden Centre, refused to give up the fight and even called on members of her own family to find someone who could take over running the office when it emerged the job could be taken on by a relative.
But this week, Royal Mail contacted Penny to say that a replacement had been found - and that the Post Office would be re-opening three days a week.
She said: "I was so pleased when I got the call to tell me they had found a temporary replacement and that the Post Office would open three days a week.
"The staff in the shop are looking forward to welcoming the old customers back and now they won't have to travel elsewhere.
"I was really worried we wouldn't be able to find someone. I only have a small family and there wasn't anyone who could take it on, so it's a huge relief someone has been found.
"The Post Office will be in the shop next Thursday (February 5) setting the computer system up but I'm not sure when it will be open for business, but as soon as we know we will put posters up in the shop to let everyone know the new days and times."
A Royal Mail spokesperson hinted it was likely the service would resume in the store soon, although there was no confirmation on an official date when the office would re-open.
The spokesperson said: "Post Office Ltd are continuing to look for a permanent solution but in the meantime we are working towards appointing a temporary subpostmaster at Catterall Post Office."
