A SOLICITOR from St Michael's who has a brain injured child is launching a pioneering scheme to maximise the recovery chances of similarly affected adult and child accident victims.
Andrew Lindsay, along with fellow solicitor David Smith, has started Rehab4Life, which helps victims of accidents access up to £125,000 to pay for fast-track rehabilitation and cover loss of earnings.
Early access to rehabilitation is vital for victims and families, but getting the money to pay for it can be complex. Legal arguments over compensation can take years and access to NHS treatment can depend on where the victim lives.
Under the Rehab4Life scheme, Andrew and David will fight the victim's compensation case while they are undergoing rehabilitation, on a 'no-win, no fee' basis, using some of the country's best neuro-lawyers.
If Andrew and David take on a case, Rehab4 Life will facilitate a loan of up to £125,000. If the case is won, the loan is paid back from the compensation award. If it is lost the insurance company covers the repayment of the loan.
The scheme is backed by world renowned neurological expert Professor Mike Barnes, and is set to help people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) across England and Wales.
Andrew's daughter Tracy, 26, has quadriplegic cerebal palsy and can only move her right arm, while David's son Peter, 20, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at four months and was later found to have autism.
Andrew, 52, described how the idea came to him.
He said: "I was jetlagged in Chicago and couldn't sleep. I was thinking of a way I could help a woman with TBI who couldn't work and needed urgent rehabilitation.
"It can take years for money to come through but I knew if I could get her some help her chances of recovery were greater. Then I thought about a finance and insurance scheme and it was like a light going on."
More information about the scheme is available at www.rehab4life .co.uk
