STALMINE'S former village hall will be given a "desperately needed" makeover thanks to a £10,000 lottery grant.
Staff at the hall, now called the Stalmine reading and recreation room, applied for the grant to improve the centre's kitchen, which they say was falling to bits.
The floor of the kitchen and much of the equipment was, according to those who applied for the grant, in need of urgent repair to prevent the hall from closing down on health and safety grounds.
Repairs were also needed to the centre's plumbing and electrical supply.
And those works will now get the go ahead, starting as soon as possible, after reading room bosses secured the cash from the lottery's Awards for All scheme.
Muriel Bradshaw, who applied for the grant, said: "This will really benefit the village.
"We desperately needed a new kitchen.
"We actually needed a new roof on the hall which was a top priority but we didn't have time to apply and wait for the grant so had to take out a loan.
"But we couldn't keep doing that so we put together the plans and we're delighted to have been successful.
"It's going to be a big improvement."
