POLICE have revealed that last week's cruel shooting of pet cat 'Tex' was not the first incident of its kind in St Michael's.
Another cat and a dog have also suffered injuries after being shot by an air gun in recent weeks, and police are linking the three attacks.
As revealed in The Courier last week Tex, who is owned by Lesley Park, had to have a leg amputated after she was shot.
Yesterday (Tuesday), PC Simon Jones, PCSO Geoff Mole, Insp Dave Vickers and an RSPCA inspector met in the village to discuss plans for an operation to catch the offenders.
And PC Jones is keen to reassure the community that the police are taking the shootings very seriously.
He said: "Two shootings of cats have been reported to us, and recently another male came forward stating that his dog has also been shot with an air pellet.
"We think the three incidents have happened within a two-week time scale. This is a bit of a worrying trend and we need to discuss the best way to take this forward and try to apprehend the offenders."
Police have already carried out letter drops throughout the village and conducted door-to-door enquiries.
They are hoping to work through the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator to make key members of the community aware of the problem.
Officers will also make enquiries with local air weapons suppliers to see if they can offer any advice or details that will help.
PC Jones continued: "I would urge members of the community to report anyone acting suspiciously in the village.
"I feel a sense of personal responsibility to apprehend these offenders. It's affected me, even as a police officer, how somebody could be so callous to do this. In partnership with the RSPCA we will be doing everything in our power to bring these offenders to justice.
"I have never come across anything like this before. We want to take hold of it before it gets out of hand and with St Michael's being such a small village we understand how it will be affecting the community. I would like to reassure them that this is one of the top priorities for the neighbourhood policing team."
Anyone with information should contact PC Jones or PCSO Mole on 01995 607869.
