A popular agricultural show is set to return next year, after almost a decade away.
Organisers of the Royal Lancashire Show have announced that the show will take place on August 15 and 16 2015 at the showground at Salesbury Hall in Ribchester.
The 247 year old show, organised by the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society Ltd, was last held in 2006.
It has had troubled history and has been cancelled in recent years due to bad weather and problems finding a suitable site. But now organisers say they are confident the show can be revived.
Secretary David Marriott said: “We have just opened our office so we have a base to work from which is ideal and we are back at Salesbury Hall, by kind invitation of the Mr Colin Mustoe and his family.
“We are also being supported by Ribble Valley Council and we’ve also managed to sort out one of the major problems which is access to the car parking field.
“ Lancashire Highways and Lancashire Police have got together with us and we have come up with a workable solution.
“We feel very confident. We are talking to a number of sponsors.”
David added: “There should be a county show in Lancashire. It was a great loss, we feel, that for these past few years there hasn’t been one.
“What we are trying to do at the moment is recreate the show committee and the stewards for the various sections. We are looking for volunteers. We need people to come forward.
“In 2006 over the three days we had close to 50,000 people.
“The show next year is two days, the reaction that we are getting from social media seems to indicate it will be a popular event. We are very enthusiastic.
The once annual event has been held in various locations across the county including Garstang and Astley Park in Chorley.
In 2007 and 2008 the show was rained off and a row over where to stage the event in 2009 meant it didn’t take place.
In 2010 organisers were forced to admit defeat in their bid to keep it running and sold off more than 60 trophies.
David added: “If we hadn’t sold the trophies then we wouldn’t be having a show next year.
“It was regrettable in one sense but the point is it has kept the society a float and given us a little bit of capital.”
