Wyre Council leader Peter Gibson has hit back at claims by the public that eastern Wyre is “bombarded with planning applications”.

He has written an open letter saying if there’s going to be a debate on development “let it be based it on facts”.

Let’s have a debate on developments but let it be based on facts

Coun Peter Gibson

Coun Gibson said: “It has been said on occasions that the rural East is being bombarded with planning applications while the West of the borough is not.

“I would point out that, currently, there are applications or permissions for 519 dwellings on Garstang Road East, 83 dwellings on Station Road, plus 50 McCarthy and Stone units and 49 dwellings off Moorland Road.

“There’s a total of 715 and they are all in Poulton and, more than that, they are all in Breck Ward, which is the Ward I represent.

“There is also an appeal at the moment on 100 dwellings on Carr Head Lane and, if this is won, there will almost certainly be another application on an adjoining field for 165 houses.

“This means Poulton is facing planning applications plus permissions of 980 dwellings.

“So let’s have a debate on developments but let it be based on facts.”

Coun Gibson then goes on to say that planning authorities do not control when applications are received.

He added they have to be determined within 13-16 weeks or the developer can appeal to Government Inspectors on grounds of non-determination.

He also states that having a local plan will mean more houses and it is the problem, not the solution.

He said: “The solution is to have real localism not fake localism and allow local authorities with their residents to decide how much development they want in their area without interference from Inspectors or anyone else.”

Planning has been a contentious issue in Garstang.
