Vulnerable adults and staff were left terrified after arsonists posted burning wood through the letterbox of a residential home.
Quick thinking support staff at the Shared Approach home Mountain View in Gates Lane, Catterall, spotted the fire and put it out before it had chance to take hold.
The property is home to adults who have severe learning difficulties, some of whom are wheelchair bound.
The drama unfolded at around 11pm on Saturday when yobs are understood to have set alight a piece of wood and shoved it through the front door of the home.
Police believe the incident may be linked to a second one at a home in Duckworth Drive at 10pm in which a front doormat was set on fire.
PC Dave Kerfoot, of the Garstang neighbourhood policing team, branded those responsible as “idiots” for putting the lives of vulnerable people at risk.
He said: “It is only the vigilance of the staff in the home who have spotted the fire and taken quick action to prevent it getting worse.
“It is almost inevitable that, had a fire taken hold in the property, that harm or loss of life could well have been caused.”
The Garstang-based Shared Approach care company were unavailable to comment ahead of the Courier deadline.
