Pupils at three schools have been learning about the part played by local servicemen during the First World War.

Garstang Community Primary School, St Thomas’ CE Primary and SS Mary and Michaels Catholic Primary, Bonds, were fascinated by the tales they read in Garstang’s Great War Heroes.

The schools lie within the boundaries of the area drawn up by the Garstang and Lower Barnacre War Memorial Committee in the early 1920s, where the names which appear on the war memorial were selected.

Headteacher of Garstang CP School, Stephanie Reeves, said: “We are grateful to Garstang Historical Society and co-authors Paul Smith and Anthony Coppin for their donations of copies of the book.”

A spokesman for Garstang Historical Society, which has overseen the publishing of the Garstang’s Great War Heroes book, said: “We gave copies to pupils with the idea is that it will be a ‘long term’ gift for both them and their families. Parents say they find it just as interesting as their children.”

The book is £8 (£7 to pensioners) at various venues including Garstang Arts Centre.
