Lancashire’s MPs have been expressing their shock and horror at the attack on their parliamentary colleague Jo Cox.

The Labour MP for Batley and Spen died after she was shot and stabbed after a surgery in her constituency.

Her Labour colleague Lindsay Hoyle, MP for Chorley, tweeted: “A rising star from the new intake, Jo’s passing will leave such a painful void in the House, so personable & bright, we will all miss her.”

Seema Kennedy, MP for South Ribble, said: “Parliament and our nation is the poorer for the loss of @Jo_Cox1. We will miss you so much, Jo.”

Cat Smith, the Lancaster and Fleetwood MP, said: “Heartbreaking news. Jo Cox was a lovely person, an outstanding MP and, importantly, a loving mother and wife. It’s so hard to comprehend.”

Ben Wallace, MP Wyre and Preston North, added: ”My thoughts and prayers are with Jo Cox MP this afternoon.”

Leader of Preston Council, Coun Peter Rankin, tweeted: “Our family in tears this afternoon for Jo Cox. So shocking and sad that such a bright caring person’s life ended.”

A 52-year-old man has been arrested after the attack, West Yorkshire Police said.
