Driving instructors in Garstang are joining a national relay to raise money for Children in Need.

The initiative sees instructors up and down the country relaying a top box – which driving instructors have on top of their cars – across Britain.

It’s for a brilliant cause and we don’t have to do much other than drive a leg of the journey

It began in Northern Ireland on October 26 and, on November 7, the relay will pass through Garstang with seven local driving instructors signed up to be involved.

One of the instructors involved is Fiona Murray, of First Garstang School of Motoring, who says “it’s great to be involved in such a special cause.”

She said: “It’ll be great to pick up the baton so to speak and I’m really looking forward to getting involved. It’s for a brilliant cause and we don’t have to do much other than drive a leg of the journey.”

The drivers will begin at Crofters Hotel and Wedding Venue on the A6 before driving 30 miles north in a convoy to the village of Bolton-le-Sands.

Fiona said: “They started down south a few days ago and the top box will be passed all the way up the country until it reaches the top. It’s a great way to raise money and I’m glad so many driving instructors have decided to get involved across the country.”

Each car that is driven is covered in spots and the money is raised by people sponsoring a spot and sticking it back onto the car.

The whole journey is 14 days, 2800 miles, 180 driving instructor convoys and finishes in Swindon on November 13 which is the Children in Need Appeal Day for 2015. Last year’s total stood at £65,000 and Fiona believes this year can surpass that total.

She said: “We want to raise as much money as possible because it really is fantastic cause. I think it is definitely achievable to beat £65,000 if we all work hard to get sponsorship. There’s a lot of people involved and I think the fact it’s for Children in Need will bring people together.”
