An aspiring actor from Garstang has landed a major role in a revival of the controversial late 1950s drama A Taste of Honey.

Alex Miller, 28, will star in the gritty play by Sheila Delaney which is to be performed at Salford Arts Theatre from November 11 to 14.

The former Garstang High and Preston College student will be performing with members of Inhouse Professional Theatre.

The plot centres on Jo, a teenage schoolgirl with an abusive, alcoholic mother. Jo becomes pregnant after a brief affair with a sailor.

Her life gets more complicated when the child’s father sails off and Jo develops a friendship with a gay textile designer.

The play, later made into a popular film starring Rita Tushingham and Dora Bryan, highlights issues of class, race, gender and sexual orientation in mid-20th century Britain.

It was one of several working class “kitchen sink” dramas, a genre which revolutionised British theatre at the time.

Alex, who studied at the Jacques Lecoq theatre school, Paris, four years ago, said he was delighted when, after an audition, he heard he had been accepted to play the role of Peter, a spiv, who is Jo’s mother’s toyboy.

Alex said: “It’s great to be performing in a play written by Shelagh Delaney who grew up in the post-war era of industrial Salford where the play is set.

“Her influence within contemporary British theatre is still very apparent today. The play deals with some controversial and difficult issues such as mixed-race marriages and poverty - issues which are still being grappled with today.”

Alex currently works at The Lowry, Salford. His previous stage roles include Mr Carr Gomm, the hospital owner in the stage version of The Elephant Man, performed at Chorley Little Theatre.

He recently assisted in organising a fundraising event at Garstang Arts Centre starring Coronation Street star actor Malcolm Hebden (Norris Cole), in which the Corrie star answered questions about his career on the stage and on screen.
