Garstang ladies are going rugby mad. And they aren’t just watching it either.
Hot on the heels of Myerscough College launching a rugby academy, Garstang Rugby Club has is to set up a women’s team.
The recruitment day is on February 23, at the Hudson Park ground from 11am.
Interested women can turn up for training from 11.30am to 12.45pm, led by RFU women’s development officer John Foster.
This will be followed by an exhibition game at 2pm between UCLan Women and Lancaster University Women.
And if that’s not enough rugby for the day, devotees can then watch England v France in the Six Nations in the cluhouse at 5pm, minimum age will be 15.
Garstang Rugby Club president Bob Johnston said: “The formation comes off the back of the Sport England lottery funding which we recently have been awarded, to purchase our currently leased pitch and make ground improvements, we also want to tie in and grow our current mini rugby section which we run up to the age of 11 years on Sunday mornings at 9:30am.
“The timing of a new women’s rugby section is good, because in 2014 there will be the Women’s Rugby World Cup, where we hope England will once again dominate the world. Women’s rugby is growing rapidly in popularity. There are 13,645 women and girls registered to play in England, an 87 per cent increase since 2004.”
