Heart docs set to pump pedals
In training: Andrew Duncan and Nidal Bittar
Two heart specialists are taking on a challenge of a lifetime to raise money for the patients they treat.
Cardiothoracic consultants Andrew Duncan and Nidal Bittar are taking part in the Big Heart Bike Ride in Jordan this year to raise money for Blue Skies Hospitals Fund to benefit patients of the Lancashire Cardiac Centre, based in Blackpool.
Andrew, who is from Singleton, said: “You need to get yourself in to shape to do something like this so we are already training and the dog is getting longer walks..
“The challenge takes you to the Dead Sea which is the lowest point on the planet so I’m particularly looking forward to that. I think the hardest part will not only be the distance, but doing the challenge in the heat.”
Nidal said: “We started small and have done fund-raising previously with a 40 mile walk and then with the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride.
“We then decided to take on a bigger challenge and the Big Heart Bike Ride seemed like a great opportunity to test ourselves and raise money. It will be a huge challenge because I’ve never done such a thing but I’m looking forward to it.”
The 350km ride takes participants from Jerash to Petra via the Dead Sea through five days of consecutive cycling.
There will be up to 50 people taking part in the gruelling challenge. The ride takes place between November 8 and 15, however Andrew and Nidal are hoping people make donations as soon as possible. You can sponsor Nidal and Andrew through their just giving site: www.justgiving.com/ MrBittarandMrDuncan BigBikeRide
Or send a cheque made payable to Blue Skies Hospitals Fund to the Fundraising Team, Blackpool Victoria Hospital, Whinney Heys Road, Blackpool, FY3 8NR with a note stating that the money is for the Big Heart Bike Ride.
