Garstang’s town crier Hilary McGrath took on big-voiced competitors from across the UK at the British Championships.
The competition was hard fought between town criers from Northumberland to Newmarket and, as is ever the way in national competitions, standards were all extremely high.
Sadly, Hilary missed out on the title but she did the town proud and was one of the few female competitors there, taking on the likes of last year’s champion – Hull’s Michael Wood.
The weather proved kind, although rain threatened, a vast improvement on last year’s championship which had to be moved under cover into a theatre.
Actors Timothy West and Prunella Scales were filming their canal boat programme, Great Canal Journeys, on Banbury Canal and they took time for Timothy to borrow the spare mantle and jacket from Anthony Church MBE, the Banbury and Oxford Town Crier, and play the crier himself, to cheers and applause from all in the market square.
