Sporty teen Laura Poulton has been chosen as this year’s Garstang and District Children’s Festival Queen.
The 13-year-old, from Dolphinholme and a dedicated member of Garstang Table Tennis Club, was unveiled in the new role as organisers announced plans to boost funds for the popular bank holiday event in the town.
This follows a financial loss on last year’s festival, caused by the deluge which led to attendance being reduced and afternoon activities called off.
Laura, a pupil a Garstang Community Academy, said she was delighted to have been chosen for her role at the event on May 26.
She said: “I am really happy to be chosen as the queen for 2014, as I’ve watched the crowning three times and each time I wished it would be me one day.
“I’m looking forward to walking in the parade and recognising family and friends in the crowds.”
As well as her sporting hobbies, Laura enjoys performing and has taken part with the morris dancers in the previous three festivals.
In her retinue will be Millie Partington, Sophie Green, Lana Hewitt, Danni Heys, Pixie Rhodes-Pink , Niayh Johnston and, carrying the cushion, Matthew Waring.
To raise funds for the festival a Pampered Chef Cooking Show is being held at Wyrebank Banqueting Suite on Friday, March 14. It will start at 7.30pm and admission will be £3 on the door.
A spokesperson for the organisers said: “The festival made a loss last year due to the poor weather on the day, so all fundraising activities are very important to help ensure the continuity of the event.”
The first tableaux meeting will take place on Monday, March 3, at 7.30pm in the Royal Oak.
Anyone wishing to enter a float in this year’s parade is invited to attend and find out what they need to do.
The tableaux meeting will be followed at 8pm by a committee meeting which will be is open to any potential new volunteers.
