Growing issue: Cannabis was discovered in Out Rawcliffe

A 56-year-old man from the Preesall area has been arrested after a large cannabis farm was discovered at a property in Out Rawcliffe.

Police made the find on Saturday night, thanks to a tip-off from quick-thinking members of the public.

PC Dave Kerfoot said: “Observant members of the public noticed suspicious activity outside the property and contacted us, resulting in PC Steve Lewin being
despatched to investigate.

“PC Lewin was not happy with the appearance of the building, and after a bit of digging discovered the farm cleverly hidden within the building.

“Approximately 150-200 mature and flowering cannabis plants were discovered, along with approximately 30 cuttings for the next batch.

“Forensic work was carried out and a man has been interviewed and released on police bail, pending the results of the rest of the investigation.

“The plants have been seized and, following examination, will be destroyed.”

He added: “The legality of cannabis is a contentious issue with strong views on either side, however there is a demonstrable link between large scale cannabis cultivation and organised crime / terrorist groups, which use the same to fund their activities.

“Therefore, we always take reports of these farms seriously and will actively attempt to disrupt the activity and prosecute offenders.”

PC Kerfoot added that in an unrelated incident, a joint operation by Lancashire and Merseyside police targeting drugs brought across the ‘border’ had resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old man from the Merseyside area, who was found in possession of four and a half ounces of heroin. He is in custody awaiting trial.

“We believe most of the drugs brought over ended up in Lancaster and Morecambe, but it will certainly have had a knock on effect in Garstang,” said PC Kerfoot.
