Kendal has been known throughout history as ‘the auld grey town’ but there is nothing dull about this bustling place.

Its colourful cultural life, fantastic shops, museums, galleries, historic sites, leisure centre, festivals, shows and close proximity to the other attractions of South Lakeland, make Kendal an ideal place to visit.

Only half an hour from Lancaster, Kendal has a truly Cumbrian character.

The highly attractive and historic grey slate buildings, atmospheric ‘yards’ (alleyways), welcoming pubs, outdoor market, beautiful green spaces by the River Kent and ancient castle overlooking the town all add to Kendal’s charm. If you visit Kendal for a shopping spree, you will have plenty of choice.

On the main shopping street – Highgate – there are independent and high street chain stores. The Westmorland Shopping Centre also offers a wide selection of shops and there are several industrial estates and retail parks boasting car dealerships, chain stores, supermarkets and DIY stores.

Some of the most interesting independent shops can be found in the yards including Wainwright’s Yard, Woolpack Yard and Elephant Yard.

While you’re out shopping it’s also nice to relax and watch the world go by from one of Kendal’s stylish cafes or restaurants.

If you’re making a day or a weekend of it, Kendal has many attractions to visit.

The Abbot Hall gallery has a splendid selection of paintings and has touring exhibitions featuring famous artists.

It is also home to the fascinating Museum of Lakeland Life.Kendal Museum is well worth a look and the castle site is free to visit.

The Brewery Arts Centre off Highgate is at the heart of Kendal’s cultural life. It is home to a theatre, an art gallery, a cinema, a quirky pub, a nightclub and a fantastic restaurant.

Many festivals and events are staged at The Brewery and it’s a great place to chill out.

Not far from Kendal you will find the historic houses of Levens Hall and Sizergh Castle.

Levens has world-famous topiary gardens and Sizergh is a breath-taking National Trust property.Staff at Kendal’s Tourist Information Centre will be delighted to help you find out more about the local attractions.
