A GARSTANG butcher has received praise from a top food writer for one of his award-winning pies.
Tim Hamlet’s homemade pork pies made fresh at his Church Street butchers have been a favourite among local pie lovers in the area for some time.
But now Tim’s scrumptious favourite has gained national recognition after a customer recommended the pie to food critic Tom Parker Bowles.
The Daily Mail Live columnist is currently on a quest to discover the country’s best homemade pork pie and commenting in his column he said of Hamlet’s pork pie: “It’s an elegant pie, with lots of jelly, firstrate meat and one of the finest crusts I’ve ever had the joy of biting through.”
Tim learned of his nomination following a surprise call from the paper’s editorial team with a request for a couple of his pies.
He baked a fresh batch and made a special trip to London the same day to deliver the pies personally to the paper’s offices.
He said: “I was a bit shocked when the editor rang to say I had been nominated but it is great recognition for the work we do and good for Garstang.
“The Chamber of Trade have been fantastic in supporting us with this and hopefully we can bring a few more people into the town.
“Since the article I’ve already taken calls for the pies as far away as Surrey, so a special thanks for the gentleman who contacted the paper about us.”
Tim, who has run the friendly butchers for eight years, says the fine flavour of the pies is down to the quality of the meat, which is all sourced locally either from the family farm in Chipping or from farms Tim knows personally in Bowland, the Ribble Valley and Cumbria area.
As well as the pork pie, other favourites include chunky steak, meat and potato, the new butter pie and sausage rolls.
This weekend customers will also be given an extra treat with a free pork pie for anyone spending over £20 .
