LAURA Nixon began washing the dishes at the Garstang WRVS old people’s luncheon club.... and before long had become chief cook, project manager and bottle washer!

The popular Garstang woman, who has decided to step down from the role after 20 years, was thanked by the group’s officials and members in a ceremony at their base in the basement of the former Discovery Centre, Garstang.

Laura, of Hazelhurst Drive, who hails from Middleton, near Manchester, has a background in catering, having catered for Girl Guides and the Toc H organisation. She said she had thoroughly enjoyed her time with the Garstang group.

Among those thanking her was the Mayor of Garstang, Coun Lady Dulcie Atkins.
