GARSTANG Ladies Hockey club celebrated their efforts as finishing runners up in the Lancashire Central Premier League at their end of season awards.

The club recently held the event at the Norman Jepson Inn, near Preston.

This season 2012 has proved one of the best years with the first XI finishing runners up in the Lancashire Central Premier league and in the final of the Caley Cup.

The second XI and third XI both did well and finished fifth in their divisions against strong competition.

It was both a happy and sad occasion, with the announcement of the retirement of Mags Crofts and Becky Goldsmith – who announced she would have to stop playing through injury.

A club spokesman said: “Mags has been a stalwart administrator and second team doughty defender of great quality for many years and will be sorely missed.

“Becky was a great first team winger with her trademark One Arm Bandit runs and expletives when she lost the ball.”

Umpire and occasional 3rd XI member, Angela Hooper was thanked for her loyal service to the club and presented with a bouquet of flowers.

It was also announced that Megan Ditchfield – the 2nd XI keeper and captain, not content with playing for Lancashire Under-18s and Under-21s, has now been selected to play for the North of England Under-21s against Scotland in June.
