Army Reservist James Simpson, from Garstang, is back from a work trip with a difference – five days river rafting in South Africa.
Kingsman Simpson, 30,was among a group of reservists from Kohima Company, 4th Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (4 LANCS) who tackled the waters on the Tugela River.
Exercise Northern Whitewater Duke took place in the Kwazulu Natal province and provided an opportunity for the reservists to undertake robust adventure training which was both physically and mentally challenging.
James, who has been in the Army Reserve for two years, said: “The white water rafting expedition was amazing and the views were outstanding.”
At the end of the expedition the reservists visited the famous battlefield sites of Rorke’s Drift and Spion Kop before returning home.
The Officer Commanding Kohima Company Major Nick Kennon said: “This was an excellent opportunity for soldiers from across the battalion to challenge themselves with tough adventurous training in a foreign country.”
