Pupils at Garstang Community Primary School enjoyed taking part in a cross-curricular project focusing on the paintings of Lancashire artist L S Lowry.

The ‘Meeting Mr Lowry’ fortnight included painting, singing, writing and dancing sessions organised by Mrs Winstanley and Mrs Thomas.

As part of the ‘creativity week’ event, which looked at the artist’s urban and seaside paintings, specialist art tutor Paul Priestley visited the school to teach pupils how to paint in the style of Lowry.

Other specialist sessions were led by the Preston-based Blue Moose Dance Company, which helped each class explore Lowry paintings through dance. For the final day of the project pupils and staff were encouraged to dress in the kind of clothes worn by Lowry’s characters from his famous paintings.

Organiser Mrs Suzanne Thomas, deputy head at the school, said the event had been a big success. Scores of parents visited the school in Oak Road for a special closing exhibition and dance display by Ash class on February 5 had Mrs Thomas added all had appreciated the work put in by the pupils.

Meanwhile, the whole school community has upped efforts to fight against Lancashire County Councils’ proposed library closures
