It’s the glory of Garstang!

The town’s triumphant gardeners scooped a gold award in the UK finals of the RHS Britain in Bloom contest’s Small Town category – and are already planning next year’s displays.

Judges heaped glowing praise upon the town’s green fingered team, praising it for its pride and passion and describing it as “one of the best bloom communities in the United Kingdom.”

They noted: “The Garstang bloom team can be proud of its working partnership with the community. It is good to see that you have continued to maintain one of the finest track records of any bloom group.”

Norah Hoyles MBE, chairman of the Garstang in Bloom Steering Group, and local retailer Lyn Nickson from the Bloom Steering Group, received the award from TV gardener Bob Flowerdew at an awards ceremony.

Norah said: “I have to say a very big thank you to the bloom group and everybody involved this year.”

Garstang was one of four finalists in the small category at the UK finals, with the top small town category winner award going to Ahoghill, in Ulster. Sedgefield in Northumberland and Hunman in Yorkshire also gained Small Town gold awards.

Norah has had a leading role in Garstang’s bloom initiatives for the past 28 years and says flower power is vital for the town, its trade and tourism. She said: “Taking part in Britain in Bloom is so important for Garstang. It encourages tourism and gets local businesses to take an interest and participate. Both the local community and the Bloom Team are tremendous.”
