Making waves: Members of Preston Divers with Oscar, their new recruit

A scuba diving club with members from Garstang and Longridge has a new “recruit”.

Life-size plastic and stainless steel dummy “Oscar” has joined Preston Divers, which meets at Fulwood leisure centre pool.

“Oscar”, who will help divers with their training, has been bought with the help of a grant from Preston Sports Forum.

The club’s diving officer Martin Burns, of Calder Vale, said: “Oscar is a great new member of our team. A realistic plastic and stainless steel dummy who wears full dive gear, Oscar will help our trainees and rescue divers with all their rescue training.

“He seems very popular, although he doesn’t say much!”

Club chairman Bob Denmark, of Garstang, added: “We have been trying to find funds to recruit someone like Oscar for some time.

“We are very grateful to Preston Sports Forum who gave us a substantial contribution to his purchase.

“We used to practice on live subjects, which could get a bit scary at times.”
